LA FORÊT BELGE
La forêt belge couvre 706 530 hectares, ce qui représente 23 % du territoire national. On retrouve 557 909 hectares de forêts en région wallonne, 146 381 hectares en région flamande et 2 240 hectares en région bruxelloise(1).
Depuis plus d’un siècle, la superficie des forêts belges ne cesse d’augmenter : 435 000 hectares en 1866, 618 000 hectares en 1970 et 692 916 hectares en 2000, soit près de 60 % d’accroissement en 140 ans. Les forêts représentaient 21,23 % du territoire belge en 2002. Dans les prochaines années, les disponibilités en bois indigènes vont continuer d’augmenter.
Si, actuellement, la productivité moyenne annuelle est, toutes essences confondues, d’environ 6,4 m³/ha, elle n’atteignait au début du siècle dernier que 1,5 m³/ha ! Elle a donc quadruplé tandis que la qualité de nos bois s’est fortement améliorée.
Avec plus de 50 % de sa surface recouverte de forêts, la province de Luxembourg arrive nettement en tête par rapport à ses consœurs. Suivent, par ordre d’importance, les provinces de Namur, Liège, Hainaut, Anvers, Limbourg, Brabant (Wallon et Flamand), Flandre orientale et Flandre occidentale.
